Introduction

Rogaland is the area where the South coast meets Western Norway. In the south of the county you may visit Dalane, a region characterised by its rugged, rocky landscape.

In the inner and northern parts of the county the nature so typical of Western Norway begins. Here you may visit deep fjords and vast moors and mountain areas.

Situated in the middle of Rogaland county is the Boknafjord basin with its abundance of large and small islands, islets and reefs. South of the Boknafjord, the landscape of Jæren begins.

Jæren is perhaps most known as a busy agricultural area, but it is also famous for sandy beaches and dune landscapes several kilometres long and for its highly productive wetlands. Every bird enthusiast knows about the place Jærens Rev.

Rogaland is rich in history; it was a central area in the struggle of the Viking king Harald Hårfagre (Harald Fairhair) to become the sole ruler of Norway. The battle at Hafrsfjord in 872 AD was probably one of the decisive battles in this regard.
